English Outdoors: Learn. Explore. Discover.

Adult English courses

combine english & tourism in new york city

Our English Outdoors concept is specifically designed to immerse students in NYC life and culture, giving students the unique opportunity to practice their English in authentic NYC settings. Our morning English sessions for adults in New York take place in indoor and outdoor locations all over the city, allowing students to learn English and make the most of New York.

The city becomes the classroom! Students practice their English in places such as Bryant Park, Dumbo, Industry City, Essex Market, Central Park and more. Locations have been carefully chosen based on comfort, space, ease of access, points of interest close by, proximity of public restrooms, etc. Our group sizes have an average of 5-6 students, so teachers can give students their undivided attention. Our concept fully immerses students in NYC life and ensures that students discover different locations every day all while practicing their English and improving their overall fluency.

This interactive experience also includes Discovery Days throughout the city to places such as Central Park, the Financial District, the Bushwick Collective, Roosevelt Island, and to museums such as The Whitney Museum & the Museum of the City of New York. Discovery Days give students a fully immersive experience by helping to build fluency and confidence while exploring both iconic New York spots and some of the city’s best hidden gems. Students will discover new neighborhoods, visit famous New York City museums and landmarks, discuss themes related to art, immigration, the city’s history, and more. All locations have been carefully selected based on comfort and accessibility and vary between outdoor and indoor locations to allow for all types of weather. There is no better way to combine English and NYC tourism!

By choosing English Outdoors, students can also make a positive impact on the environment, taking advantage of natural sunlight and airflow rather than being inside and using artificial light and AC! This makes our program in New York the most sustainable, eco-wise choice for students.

FAQs

Q: What is the English Outdoors concept?
A: Our new English Outdoors concept is specifically designed to immerse students in NYC life and culture, giving students the unique opportunity to practice their English in authentic NYC settings. English Outdoors means ‘outside of the traditional classroom’ but not necessarily outside in a park: our morning English sessions take place in both indoor and outdoor locations all over the city. Instead of being in the same place everyday, students will meet in a new iconic and authentic place every day. This immersive experience allows students to practice their English in New York and make the most of NYC in a socially distant manner, all the while enjoying the best views and sights the city has to offer.

Q: What are the benefits of an outdoor program?
A: Being immersed in the life and culture of NYC adds a unique element to the experience, as students are able to truly experience NYC life and culture first-hand in authentic settings. NYC related topics and destinations are incorporated into the weekly conversation topics. Students are in the unique position to improve their English, expand their knowledge about NYC, be able to practice their English in truly authentic NYC settings, and live like a true New Yorker!

Q: Where do the English sessions take place?
A:The city becomes the classroom! EO’s morning English sessions in New York take place in locations (both indoor and outdoor) all over the city. There is a range of indoor locations for rainy days or when it is too hot in summer/too cold in winter, so lessons are guaranteed every day, whatever the weather.

Some examples of outdoor locations include: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Bryant Park, Cobble Hill Park, Madison Square Park, Domino Park & Union Square…

Some examples of indoor locations include: Brookfield Place, Essex Market, Industry City, Barnes & Nobles, & Usagi

Q: Will it be comfortable for the students? Will there be restrooms?
A: Yes and yes! Locations have been carefully chosen based on comfort, space, ease of access, points of interest close by, proximity of public restrooms, etc. They take place in small groups of 8 students maximum (average 5/6). Students seat around a table, in semi-circular seating, or in a row.

Q: What happens if it rains?
A: If it rains, gets too hot or too cold, sessions will switch to an indoor venue or be taken on one of our many cultural or educational Discovery Days located in indoor locations. New York City is full of great museums and semi-secret indoor public spaces.

Q: What about the COVID sanitary measures?
A: This is one of the advantages of being outdoors: students will make the most of the space and natural airflow rather than being inside in a crowded classroom and using Air Conditioning. We recommend that students bring a mask for public transport and a small bottle of hydroalcoholic gel to sanitize their hands as often as needed.

Q: How far will the accommodation be?
A: Our homestays are located in Brooklyn, on average 30 minutes by subway to Brooklyn Heights and 35-40 minutes by subway to Lower Manhattan. We alternate between locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan for our sessions so that students don’t always have to travel to Manhattan every morning, and also because there are plenty of great locations to explore in Brooklyn!

Q: What happens after sessions? Are there organized activities?
A: There is plenty to do and see in New York so you will never get bored! We organize 1 to 2 social activities per week which you are welcome to join (walking tours, happy hours, lunches, museums…) and we also give you plenty of suggestions of things to do in your free time (famous sights, hidden gems, festivals, markets…)

Our daily location guides also include many cool ideas for things to do and places to visit in the area after class.
