Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to belong to a fancy gym to stay active in NYC. There are many free ways to get that post-winter endorphin rush your body deserves. Here are some of our favorite ways to burn some calories in NYC.
Where: NYC Parks, Recreation Centers, in every borough
This free, drop-in fitness program has classes available in all 5 boroughs. No need to sign a yearlong sketchy contract; these classes are 100% free to join. Pick up some new dance moves or go for spin. It’s a great way to relieve some stress and meet new people. If you don’t want to ache for days, avoid the Boot Camp classes.
When: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, all summer
Why stare at the walls of a sweaty gym when you can work out with a scenic view of the Hudson. This free bi-weekly exercise series is celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer. With a variation of classes , there is something here for everyone. So, dust off your yoga mat and head down to the river for some spirited outdoor classes.
Enjoy picturesque views of the Brooklyn Bridge while attending these free waterfront fitness classes. Bust a move at Retro Dance or skip the bacon, egg, and cheese and join a Sunrise Yoga class. With a variety of classes taught by top-notch instructors, this is a great option for those seeking to get back in the swing of things or simply try something new.

Every Wednesday, you can enjoy free workout classes right in the heart of the Garment District. Stretch your limbs beside one of NYC’s most iconic architectural gems, the Flatiron Building. Zumba, Pilates and Yoga classes are some of the weekly classes available. Don’t forget to fill out and sign the release and waiver if you want to participate.
Take in the stunning views of the skyline as you lean back in your candy red kayak. These free kayak sessions are a great way to soak up the sun and give your arms a little exercise. Plus, if you fall in the water, you don’t have to shower.
